Worms! Did You Know…
We caught up with our resident Mother Lovin’ Sustainability Expert, Sarah Lamagna, to learn more about all the worms our kids have been finding this spring.
Who else loves playing in the dirt? “US!!!!!!!!!!”
Did you know that the earthy scent that comes from dirt is actually WORM POOP? Whaaat?! It's true. Worms are super rad and one of the most important creatures for establishing a healthy place for plants to grow. Worms are natural composters aerating the soil through the tunnels they make underground, which in turn create ideal conditions for native plants to thrive. While exploring their underground lair, they eat everything they can find: dead plants, live plants, dead animals, animal poo, and other microscopic organisms. After digestion, the worm excretes everything back into the soil with a bacteria called actinomycetes which give the notable earthy smell.
Plus worms are strange. They have no legs, arms, or eyes despite being sensitive to light. They can replace lost segments of their body. They breathe through their skin since they don't have any lungs. They can eat their body weight in a day! That's pretty incredible.
So next time you're out digging in your garden, make sure to keep an eye out for those wiggly, slimy things. Feel free to hold them in your hand and see if they'll poop or pee on you! Don't forget to put them back in the soil to help keep your herbs, veggies, and wildflowers growing as they should
